Vertical Time Study III (1994) by Toshio Hosokawa

The violin in the 1994 Vertically Study III symbolizes the internal voice of humans, the piano stands for nature and for the universe, which surround humans. The silence corresponds to the boundless depths of the human soul. It is a part of the Vertical Time series begun in 1992 aiming to express a design of time based upon the vertical elements rather than on the horizontal elements.

Vertical Time Study III was commissioned by the Festival of Takefu and it is dedicated to Asako Urushihara.
