The Four-Handed Game (1995) by Donald Aird
for piano four hands
The Four-Handed Game was commissioned by the Ilona Clavier Duo. Tonight's is the first full public performance. The main intervalic material of all three movements consists of a minor third, a minor second and a perfect fifth; and these intervals are used as well as harmonic sounds, giving a common language usage that (I hope) will result in most listeners finding out easily what the shapes and goals of each movement are. And since have have composed these movements with this in mind, I have tried to give the listener (and performers) expectations to be fulfilled or avoided. Of course, that is all part of game playing also. Good luck.
