Alluvium

Michelle Lou (b. 1975 USA) received a dual Bachelor's degree with Honors in double bass performance and in composition from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Following her B.A., she pursued additional studies in bass at the Conservatorio G. Nicolini in Piacenza, Italy. Michelle then returned to UCSD and completed a Master's degree in composition, continuing her work with Chaya Czernowin. A Fulbright Fellowship brought her to Austria to study at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz to work with Beat Fürrer.

Her music has been performed by ensemble ascolta at the Donaueschingen Musiktage and Wien Modern Festivals, by the Argento Ensemble at NYC's MATA Festival, and by Ensemble SurPlus at concerts in the US and Germany. She has been invited by the Arditti Quartet to participate in workshops at the Hindemith Institute in Blonay, Switzerland, culminating in a performance at the 2010 Darmstadt Ferienkurse, the project funded by the Pro-Bio Foundation. Other future projects include a piece for Ensemble Elision of Australia/UK, a solo trombone piece for Andrew Digby, and a solo piece for hardanger fiddle for Graeme Jennings.

Michelle is currently a doctoral student in composition at Stanford University working with Brian Ferneyhough.
