Clarinetist/bass clarinetist Jeff Anderle is currently enjoying an extremely diverse musical life. An exponent of contemporary classical music, Jeff is currently the clarinetist of the bi-coastal ensemble REDSHIFT. He has also performed with the Del Sol String Quartet, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and the Magik*Magik Orchestra. Past affiliations include positions as the clarinetist of the ADORNO Ensemble, clarinetist and Associate Artistic Director of The Definiens Project in Los Angeles, clarinetist at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival in 2007 and at the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble in 2006.
Jeff is also passionate about music that can't be explained in one word. He is half of the bass clarinet duo Sqwonk, which infuses aspects of folk and popular music into its own distinct rhythmic, groove-based style. Sqwonk is creating an opus for two bass clarinets by incorporating clever arrangements and commissioning composers who match its aesthetic. He is also a member of Edmund Welles, the world’s only composing bass clarinet quartet, which combines the precision of classical music with the power of heavy metal into a genre that can only be described as “heavy chamber music.” In addition, Jeff is a co-director of Switchboard Music, presenting an 8-hour marathon dedicated to composers, ensembles and bands that fuse different genres and styles of music, which is now in its 4th year.
Jeff is currently on the clarinet faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He received his Master of Music Degree there in 2006, studying clarinet with Luis Baez. Previously, he graduated summa cum laude from UCLA, where he was a student of Gary Gray. Other influential teachers include Dennis Smylie and Ben Freimuth.
